Dear Parents/Guardians:

I'd like to address two important issues with you. Please take a minute to read these messages; they are to help better your children's day and maybe their lives.

Skipping Breakfast: Some kids skip breakfast because they sleep too late or they think it's a way to stay thin. But, skipping breakfast doesn't help people maintain a healthy weight. In fact, someone who skips breakfast tends to eat more calories throughout the day. Also, a breakfast of a high sugar cereal is like eating no breakfast at all. Here are some examples of a healthy quick breakfast:

  • Single serving of whole grain, low-sugar cereal.
  • Yogurt
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Whole grain muffin
  • Trail mix of nuts, dried fruits, pretzels, crackers
  • Dry cereal. (Protein is important, such as peanut butter, nuts, and meats).

Helmets

  • I would like to remind everyone that it is a law in our state that children under the age of 16 must wear protective helmets. It is also a school rule for any student on school property. Children have been observed riding their bikes to school with the helmets on the handlebars and not on their heads. Unfortunately, we cannot enforce this law off of school grounds. Helmets may not be COOL, but they save lives.

Remember: I need all health forms in to my office as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Renee Maiolo, LPN
